Taking your pet abroad this summer? With the Pet Travel Scheme, taking your pet abroad can be a safe and hassle free experience if you follow the 3 main steps:

    1. Get your Pet Passport – or make sure your current Pet Passport is up to date. If you’re traveling to a “listed country” (see www.gov.uk/take-pet-abroad) or in the EU then your pet just needs a microchip and a rabies vaccination. Your passport may then be issued but you will not be able to travel until 21 days after vaccination so plan ahead! If you already have a passport it is worth checking your personal details are correct and you’re up to date with your rabies vaccination.

    1. Book a registered carrier – If you are travelling by boat or aeroplane you will need a registered carrier. These can also be found on the gov.uk website. Many carriers also require a health check and signed documentation before traveling is allowed.

    1. Tapeworm treatment before return to the UK – A registered veterinary surgeon is required to treat your pet for tapeworm 1-5days before your return to the UK.
