Speak up to Stop Rural Crime
24th August 2021
Crimestoppers have launched their biggest ever rural campaign after the helpline received a surge in calls during the pandemic.
There has been a 14% increase in the last 12 months of calls to the anonymous phone line reporting rural crimes.
It has been suggested that due to the rise of the public visiting the countryside in large numbers, this has led to greater exposure of potential criminal activity.
The charity launched its awareness campaign “Speak up to stop rural crime” on the 4th August. The aim of the campaign is to help visitors to the countryside identify criminal activity.
The spokesman said “We want people to know what rural crime looks like, why it’s a problem, and what the public can do to help. Rural crime is repetitive and well-organised, with criminal gangs exploiting local wildlife, environment and communities.”
Activities highlighted by the campaign include dumping and burning rubbish, machinery and equipment thefts and vandalism, poaching, badger baiting and hare coursing.
